Capacity Building

Community Action Southwark became the Council for Voluntary Services for Southwark in April 2008. Building on the work of the organisations it replaces - Southwark Community Care Forum (SCCF) and Southwark Action for Voluntary Organisations (SAVO).

The Capacity Building team

The members of the Capacity Building Team are here to support you with your organisational development needs.  In particular, they will assist you by providing sustainability advice and support; advise you on premises related issues; guide and develop your Board of Trustees; and identify and link you into training opportunities in order to develop the skills of your workforce.

Deborah Hayman is the new Training Coordinator at CAS. For two years prior to joining CAS Deborah worked for the Heritage Lottery Fund while studying a Masters in Education, Health Promotion and International Development. Deborah will be the first point of contact for training needs and advice. As it is important to offer the tools for individuals, organisations and communities to empower themselves, CAS sees the provision of innovative training opportunities as one way of doing just that.

CAS already provides a fantastic training service and I hope to continue this while raising greater awareness of the various training opportunities available through CAS and its affiliates, as well as helping to provide a more targeted training and information service that meets the needs of the voluntary sector for the present and future. I look forward to working with you.

Sally Bagwell has joined the CAS Capacity Building team as Sustainability Officer. She’ll be working with organisations as they make plans for the future and develop their strategies for sustainability.  She is hoping to help organisations find innovative ways to thrive in the new funding and policy environment, enabling them to focus their energy on their important work delivering services to people across the borough. Her role also involves supporting trustees with matters of governance and charity management and will have a particular focus on premises issues faced by organisations, and will be carrying out some research and mapping to understand the profile of the sector in Southwark.

Last year she studyied a Masters in American history, and prior to that worked at GuideStar Data Services, a social enterprise which holds information about the third sector. There she provided data and analysis services to organisations including NCVO, the Third Sector Research Centre and CapacityBuilders.

I’m really looking forward to talking with people and finding out what mix of personal support and online resources CAS can provide to meet their needs – so please feel free to contact me if there’s anything you’d like to discuss.

Celine Rotcajg - Sustainability Officer

Celine RotcajgTelephone: 020 7358 7022

Celine is joining CAS as a Sustainability Officer. She will provide strategic support to ensure that local voluntary and community sector organisations are sustainable. Providing advice to organisations looking to develop their activities, needing planning, funding, legal or merger advice. She will also be continuing the work undertaken with trustees.

In the current climate, it is fundamental for Third sector organisations to be able to adapt to changes. Changing is not going to be easy and it is a crucial opportunity for the VCS sector in Southwark to engage determinatively and creatively together by encouraging long term partnerships and collaboration. New opportunities will arise such as Southwark Pathways which Celine will be leading on.

Before CAS, she worked for the British Institute of Human Rights where she operated the organisational and administrative systems of human rights training provided to third and public sector organisations in the UK. Prior to that she was an intern at Amnesty International working on a human rights education project and holds a Masters in Public International Law (specialising in Human Rights Law).

Having lived in Southwark for two years I am proud to participate in the development of the third sector in my Borough
