The Wave Project London is an award-winning charity running therapeutic surf and paddle-board sessions for young people with complex needs from the Southwark borough. Our surfing projects are evidence-based and designed to improve young people their self-confidence, resilience and motivation. The sessions are delivered by a fantastic team of volunteer surf mentors and overseen by a qualified surf instructor. All our staff, paid and voluntary, has undertaken training around our clients' needs. 

What day: Saturdays and/or Sundays (only Sundays Mid June- Mid July) 

How many hours: Half a day

Minimum Commitment: 6 days: 1 Sat/Sunday during 6 weeks  

Where: Southwark London <-> East Wittering  

Purpose of the Surf Mentor Volunteers

The Wave Project London is looking for Surf Mentor Volunteers. As a Surf Mentor you will bring your positivity and enthusiasm to the beach sessions and get ready for a lot of fun! The sessions are run by the Wave Project coordinator and two qualified instructors from the surf school. All you have to do is help the clients follow the directions from the instructors and help keep them relaxed and happy. You will then get in the sea where the action happens and assist the clients to enjoy the water. 

This year we organise five 6-week surf sessions over the weekend in May-June-July September and October.  

COURSES 1 & 2 start on Saturday and Sunday 4-5th May 

COURSE 3 starts on Sunday 16th June 

COURSES 4 & 5 start on Saturday and Sunday 7-8th September 

Who are we looking for? 

  • Surf Mentors assist the clients at the beach sessions and other activities   
  • Friendly and approachable 
  • Willingness to learn
  • Reliable

What the volunteer would gain from the volunteering opportunity:

  • Helping children and helping to make a difference in the community

  • Learn about water-related activities, the ocean and its effects on mental-physical health 

Becoming a volunteer with the Wave Project London will welcome you to a family of passionate people from all ages/backgrounds trying to make a difference. Our project focuses on young people from the Southwark borough while at the same time trying to reach out to the wider community. We organize monthly social meetings and provide additional, relevant training in areas such as water skills, first aid and mental health awareness.
