Les Alden, MBE, sadly passed away in early January after a short illness; he had spent his last years as an active Councillor on the South Coast in Worthing where he had moved to in 2015.
He was one of the first trustees who set up Southwark Community Care Forum back in 1990 which subsequently merged with Southwark Action for Voluntary organisations to become Community Action Southwark, now Community Southwark. He was a trustee throughout this time, mostly serving as Chair, standing down in 2013.
He had previously served as a Councillor for 23 years in Southwark and used his experiences gained in that role to great effect in persuading the local authority of the value of the community and voluntary sector organisations and the need of their support to best benefit the local community’s health and well-being.
He was a great believer in in community and supporting those most in need, his contribution to Southwark over the years was outstanding, considering himself to be a player rather than a gentleman! Thank you Les.
