Lend a helping hand and become a volunteer. If you are over 50, want to learn new skills, meet new people, have fun and are able to help 15 hours a week, Kings College Hospital would love to hear from you.
Kings College Hospital have recently been fortunate to secure a grant to integrate volunteers into the Emergency Department at both Kings College Hospital and Princess Royal University Hospital.
This pilot comes from NESTA, an innovation Foundation and the Office for Civil Society, who want to specifically target volunteers over the age of 50. This is due the desire to want to find ways to improve the lives of those who may be looking to retire or are already in retirement.
The other main aspect of this role, is to improve patient experience and outcome, whilst transitioning through the Emergency Department. Volunteers will focus on patient welfare needs, befriending, offering emotional support and signposting, helping with refreshments and food for the patients, our volunteers will also support children within the department if parents are otherwise engaged.
Looking to the future the role is also hoping to move into the community and support a small percentage of patients attending the ED, with transitioning home after their attendance. This will hopefully give more support in the community.
